Culinary Extras From YesterYear

Being away for many years, I don’t how the subject post is in Philadelphia.  These were three of my favorites from prior days.   They were great before dinner.

1. Arthur’s Steak House-The super waiters gave you a basket a fresh rye bread and firm kosher pickles even before you ordered cocktails.

2. Cheshire Cheese-The main dining room of the now demolished Sheraton Hotel at 17th and John F. Kennedy Boulevard. A generous loaf of cheddar cheese under a bell jar.  Served with Melba Toast.  I always had it with their imported beer on draft.

3. Kite and Key Room-The colonial dining room of the Benjamin Franklin Hotel, now converted to apartments.  The hotel served, on the bed of shaved ice, carrots, celery hearts, green and black olives, and green onions.  This was the best of the three.
