After winning their first five games, the Packers played, for four weeks, their worst offense ever under Vince Lombardi. The fact that GB won two of these games was remarkable.
Week 6-The Dallas Cowboys at 2-3 came into Green Bay to play the 5-0 Packers. Cowboys halfback Don Perkins gained 133 yards on 22 carries. The Packers sacked Craig Morton nine times for 52 yards. The Cowboys sacked Bart Starr five times also for 52 yards. Dallas led in total yardage 192 to 63 and in first downs 13 to 7. However, the Cowboys turned the ball over five times to none for Green Bay. That was the deciding factor. Green Bay defeated Dallas 13 to 3.
Week 7-The Green Bay Packers at 6-0 came into Chicago to play the 3-3 Bears. This was a disaster for GB. Chicago defeated the Packers easily 31 to 10.
Week 8-The Detroit Lions at 4-3 came into Green Bay to play the 6-1 Packers. The Lions got four turnovers; had 180 total yards to just 68 for Green Bay; sacked Bart Starr 11 times for 109 yards in losses; and yielded only eight first downs. Detroit won this defensive battle 12 to 7.
Week 9-The Los Angeles Rams at 1-8 came into Green Bay to play the 6-2 Packers. In a remarkable coincidence, each side sacked the quarterback five times for 45 yards. The Rams turned the ball over five time. Green Bay won two field goals to one or 6 to 3. Good game if you like sacks.
The Packers corrected their problems in week 10.
